One ongoing project undertaken this fall by the Fort Wallace Memorial Association is planning for a new home for the Rhea Pump Organ Collection. These 55-plus pump and reed organs were donated to the Fort Wallace Museum, but are currently in storage until a permanent home can be created to house them. This gracious gift by Dick Rhea and his family will become an important permanent display to be enjoyed by our visitors for years to come!
The current thinking is that a whole new building is needed, preferably leading from the Main (original) Museum building west wall through a breezeway and a location north of the Pond Creek Stagecoach Station. Bids have been sought, and initial costs look to be around $105,000 for a turnkey project.
The Rhea Pump Organ Collection Building Fund has been established as a separate Museum account, and donations have been coming in! The pursuit of grants will an important strategy along with local fundraising. We are pleased to report that we received $500 from the Midwest Energy Community Fund for the Building Fund! The total raised to date is $10,600; look for updates as we pursue other possibilities! If you have interest in this project, please consider us for your end-of-year giving!
