Oscar Raymond “Ray” Grubb, age 89½, of Mesa, AZ left this life July 6, 2018 at home. Ray was born on the family farm December 16, 1928 to Vernie Layman and Lacie Agatha (Thomason) Grubb of Fithian Illinois. He was named for a beloved community doctor, Oscar Michael.
His childhood in a farming community taught him his strong work ethic. He attended school at Hope and Oakwood, IL, and completed his high school requirements early. Then, 12, days after his 17th birthday, he joined the Army Air Corps, which later became the United States Air Force, and served as a meteorologist for 21 years. During his time in the Air Force he achieved the rank of Master Sergeant, which he felt was one of his greatest achievements. He was transferred 26 times; his two tours of duty in England were his favorites. He was a veteran of WWII, Korea, and Vietnam.
After retiring from the Air Force, he worked for the United States Civil Service as a meteorologist for several years where he forecasted the weather and gave it to radio and TV stations for broadcast.
His hobbies included NASCAR, Rockies baseball, reading, travel, playing cards and other games, and dancing. He spent many years working with the Boy Scouts, serving as scout leader and district representative. He was a member of Harvey Park Christian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Susan (Stewart) Grubb of Mesa, AZ, children: Caroline “Bunny” Grubb, TX, Carl “Steve” Grubb, Pahrump, NV, Chris (Kathy) Grubb, Ft. Collins, CO, C. Elizabeth “Candy” Grubb, Aurora, CO, and Colin (Tracie) Grubb, Lakewood, CO; step-children: David (Kelly) Jackson and Matthew (Michelle) Jackson, Littleton. CO; grandchildren: Teffany (Stephanie) Johnston, Evans, CO, Patricia Krauss, Waco, TX, Heidi (James) Delaney, Norman, OK, Calypso (Keith) Laubhan, Denver, CO, Justin and Shawn (fiancée Katie Holmes) Metz, Mesa, AZ; step-grandchildren: Ella, Emma, Emily, Vayda, and Sydney Jackson, Littleton, CO; great grandchildren: Lance Spegal, Colorado Springs, CO, David and Renee Mullins, Waco, TX, Vincent and Savannah Delaney, Norman, OK, Kaylee and Jarod Oswood, Mesa, AZ; sister Gloria Dreher, Oakwood, IL, sisters-in-law, Evelyne Grubb, Charleston, IL, and Emma Ross, Fayetteville, GA, brothers-in-law, John (Jacklyn) Stewart, Kensington, KS, and Tony (Norma) Stewart, Franklin Springs, GA, many nieces, nephews, extended family and close friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, stepfather, Russell Terhune, brothers Vernie and Peter Grubb, wife Jeannine (Martin) Grubb, granddaughter, Jennifer Gable, niece Pamela Warpenberg, and nephew Frela Grubb.
In Denver, CO, Military Honor Burial will be at Ft. Logan National Cemetery, Staging Area B, at 1:15pm followed by a Celebration of Life at Harvey Park Christian Church, 3401 S Lowell Blvd at 2:30pm on Tuesday, July 24, 2018.
In Mesa, AZ, a Celebration of Life will be held in the ballroom at Las Palmas Resort, 215 N Power Rd, at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, August 15, 2018.
